Response to Media-Literate Mind

1. The idea that up to 90% of media content is owned by a handful of a huge corporations. I find this to be a little bit scary. Add to that, the concept that these corporations also help to shape the values of our culture and it becomes terrifying.2. It struck me to learn how much of the limbic brain and emotions are used in advertising.3. I also found it fascinating to learn how quickly the media messages travels (24-30 frames per second) vs. what we are capable of processing per second (8 frames). This really makes me want to slow down the media content I view for better analysis.4. I think it's important for students to learn how much work goes into making models look good for beauty advertisements. Dove did a decent ad campaign that included some spots that exposed this, but they were using the marketing to market their own products - to make it seem like they care which seems to be another trend in advertising. I believe Special K tried something similar.5. I was impressed to learn that people got active when the FCC in 2003 proposed allowing corporations to own up to "8 radio stations, 3 TV stations and 1 newspaper in any given 'market.' I am very glad that people understood the implications for our democracy and fought against it and that, at least in this case, so many people understood the importance of not allowing media monopolies in our communities.
